Satikanta Guha - a multifaceted genius: Born in 1910, at Sylhet (now in Bangladesh), and subsequently educated in Dhaka Collegiate School, Hare School (Kolkata), and Presidency College (Kolkata), Satikanta Guha topped in the LLB examinations of Calcutta University.
He was as deeply interested in literature and history as he was in law, he edited several popular children's periodicals, wrote children's literature, published books by stalwarts of Bangla literature like Abanindranath Tagore, Shibram Chakraborty and Dakshinaranjan. Founder of Purba Parishad, a cultural organization devoted to dance and drama, he took his ballet troupe to perform in Sri Lanka at the invitation of the Government. Finally, ably assisted by his wife Mrs. Prity Lata Guha, he founded South Point School, an educational institution that has since enjoyed the inception, has been substantially assisting several educational institutions and students in Kolkata and beyond.
With South Point firmly established,he turned to his first love.He received the Mouchak Award for his contribution to children's literature, and the Rabindra Puraskar for his novel Natyakar.
Blessed with a rare insight, he could recognise and appreciate greatness.Author, painter, singer, dancer, actor, craftsman, scholar-whoever came to him for help got it ungrudgingly. Those who were genuinely gifted found in him a kindred spirit who befriended, encouraged, and helped them in distress and need.
Vishmadeb Chattopadhyay,Gopesh Chakraborty,Subho Thakur,Guru Gopinath, Madhav Menon, Kelu Nair, Sukumar De Sarkar, Indrani Rehman were only a few. During his lifetime South Point was a home to many organisations like the little Theatre Group,Ali Akbar College of Music, Ballygunge Cultural Seminar and Guru Thankamani Kutty's school of dancing.
In 1999, the Foundation decided that establishing a School based on Satikanta Guha's ideals would be the fittest possible manner to honour him. And thus Garden High School was born.
